    The Spiritual Creation of Animals

Before any creature walked the earth, it existed as a spirit. Latter-day Saints believe that animals were created spiritually before they were given physical bodies. This foundational doctrine helps us understand their eternal nature.

While there is a major difference between our spirits and animal spirits—since we are the begotten children of Heavenly Father—they are still living souls. They were created by God with a purpose and a place in His grand design.

Because they have spirits, they are also subject to the fall and death. However, this also means they are eligible for the blessings of redemption. Mortal animals will be saved through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.

What the Scriptures Say About Animals in the Resurrection

The scriptures provide clear evidence regarding animals in the resurrection. In the Doctrine and Covenants, specifically D&C 77:2-3, we find a beautiful revelation about the eternal destiny of earth’s creatures. It confirms that animals will be in heaven. This scripture also reveals that they will have immortal bodies in the same exact likeness as their mortal bodies. In other words, the pets you loved on earth will look just as you remember them. Every creature God has created passes through this pattern of spiritual creation, mortal life, and eventual immortality.

The Prophet Joseph Smith taught that heaven will be filled with myriad forms of life from myriad worlds. These animals will enjoy eternal felicity and happiness. They will even praise God in their own languages that He perfectly understands.

    Teachings from Latter-day Prophets

Latter-day prophets have spoken clearly about the reality of animals in the resurrection. The First Presidency observed in 1909 that the whole animal creation will be perfected and perpetuated in the hereafter. Each class of animal will enjoy eternal felicity in its distinct order or sphere.

Joseph Fielding Smith also declared this truth to the church. He taught that animals, just like man, are to be recreated and renewed because they are living souls. He promised they will come forth to enjoy the blessings of immortal life.

Even Joseph Smith expected to see his own animals again. Orson F. Whitney noted that Joseph Smith fully expected to have his favorite horse with him in eternity after it passed away. This personal detail shows how deeply early leaders believed in this doctrine.

    Finding Comfort in Eternal Promises

Elder Bruce R. McConkie taught that animals, birds, fishes, and all forms of life occupy an assigned sphere. They play an eternal role in the great plan of creation, redemption, and salvation. Knowing this brings immense comfort to anyone who has had to say goodbye to a pet.

You do not have to worry that your bond with your pet ends at death. The promise of animals in the resurrection is real and sustained by divine revelation. They will be restored to their perfect frames.

Take a few moments to read through the short, embedded document below. Let these quotes from prophets and the scriptures bring you peace and hope for a joyous future reunion.
