Have you ever stopped to truly consider the majesty of the Savior? During the Christmas and Easter holidays, we often sing tenderly about Him, but we can sometimes lose grasp of His sheer magnitude and majesty. By reading His direct words, we gain a much clearer understanding of His eternal role.
The embedded document below compiles an incredible list of 322 statements made largely by Christ Himself, about Himself. By studying these declarations out loud, whether by yourself or with your children, you will undoubtedly begin to feel something spiritually different.
The Majesty and Magnitude of the Savior
When asking the question of who is Jesus Christ, the best place to look is at His own declarations. Across multiple books of scripture, Christ repeatedly testifies of His own divine nature. For example, He boldly declares, “I am the first, and I am also the last” and simply, “I am God”.
He also reminds us of His eternal consistency by stating, “I am the same yesterday, today, and forever”. These powerful “I am” statements leave absolutely no doubt about His divine authority. He is the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and He wants us to deeply understand His eternal mission.
Ancient Declarations in the Old Testament
Long before His mortal birth, Jehovah spoke clearly to the ancient prophets of Israel. In fact, this comprehensive list includes 117 specific statements drawn from the Old Testament alone. He declared to Moses and the Israelites, “I am the Lord thy God, who hath brought thee out of the land of Egypt”.
He repeatedly assured the ancient patriarchs of His divine protection. He promised them, “I am the God of Abraham thy father: fear not” and “I am the Lord your God”. These ancient teachings prove that He was actively guiding and loving His covenant people long before His mortal ministry began in Jerusalem.
The Savior’s Ministry in the New Testament
During His mortal life, Jesus continued to testify of His divine mission to the people of Galilee and Judea. The compilation features 74 beautiful statements recorded in the New Testament. He taught the multitudes, “I am the bread of life” and promised that “he that cometh to me shall never hunger”.
He also offered immense comfort to His disciples by declaring, “I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep”. He reminded His followers of His pre-mortal authority by stating, “Before Abraham was, I am”. He also declared, “I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live”.
Testimonies from the Book of Mormon
Following His glorious resurrection, the Savior visited the inhabitants of the ancient Americas. The master list includes 47 profound statements taken directly from the Book of Mormon. Upon appearing to the Nephites, He boldly proclaimed, “I am the light and the life of the world”.
He taught them that the Law of Moses was fulfilled in Him, saying, “I am he that gave the law” and “I have come to fulfill the law, therefore it hath an end”. He further testified, “I am Jesus Christ the Son of God” and confirmed that He was the one prepared from the foundation of the world to redeem His people.
Modern Revelation in the Latter Days
The heavens are not closed, and the Lord continues to speak to modern prophets today. To complete the study, the compilation highlights 78 statements from the Doctrine and Covenants and 6 from the Pearl of Great Price. He identified Himself to the Prophet Joseph Smith by saying, “I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last”.
He also offers beautiful reassurance to the faithful Saints in the latter days. He promises, “I am with you even unto the end” and “I the Lord am with you, and will stand by you”.
