I feel so uplifted and instructed as I read and ponder the scriptures.

Occasionally I like to review summaries of various scriptures to see a broader scope of the gospel. I read this list as if it were a single book of scripture to enjoy the breadth of God’s kindly but decisive dealings with mankind.

Caution: How to identify truth in the scriptures? A single scripture cannot be used as “truth” for 3 reasons:

1- It may have been translated incorrectly,

2- Your interpretation may not be what was in the mind of the person speaking.

3- The audience may have dictated the unique depth and breath of what was said.

For example, you may say to a child to warn them, “Never go across the road. Wait for Mommy and Daddy!” but at a later time you’ll encourage them to cross the road (but look both ways first) and get the mail, and eventually to not only cross the road but to drive on it. It would be incorrect to take the first statement (Don’t cross) and build a life-time mantra to govern all “road” activities for an individual.

One must look for corroborating evidence of truth to ensure a more correct understanding of godly principles.  For example, in John 1:18 & 6:46 is a statement that “No man hath seen God at any time,” but there are over 100 instances of Godly appearances to man (See another post to this website called “Appearances of the Father and Son,” Mar 2022, 14pp); therefore the statement should be more fully understood that “And no man hath seen God at any time, except he hath borne record of the Son; for except it is through him[,] no man can be saved. (JST, John 1:19)

Another source of corroborating evidence is the writings of the Early Church/Christian Father (ECF) in the first 500 years after the death of Christ. As a body of teachings (not individually), many gospel truths can be clarified through these teachings. (See another post to this website called “ECF quotes and sources,” Nov 2021, 22 pp)

There are many religious groups and individuals that take isolated statements (that are incomplete) and build whole incorrect doctrines around them.  Whether the statement is made by deity or a prophet representing deity, great care must be taken in searching for the mind of the person making the statement by looking at a body of statements to provide a richer, more correct understanding of any concept.

For example, some say “God is love” (1 John 4:16) sometimes as a justification for committing sin which they assume will be magically removed because God loves them… which is of course, silly. “Love” has nothing to do with the removal of the effects of sin which must start with the sinner. The eventual removal is, in fact, a function of “love” through the Atonement of Jesus Christ but the specific steps to that forgiveness are made by the individual themselves.

Why not use as a mantra: (positive traits) “God is faithful” (1 Corinthians 10:13), “God is light” (1 John 1:5), “God is spirit” (John 4:24), “God is our refuge” (Psalms 62:7-8); (or negative traits which are not actually negative) “God is a consuming fire” (Deuteronomy 4:24), God is a jealous God” (Deuteronomy 4:24), “The Lord was angry” (Deuteronomy 9:8, Numbers 11:1-2), “The Lord God is a vengeful God, strong in wrath” (Nahum 1:2), and many other varied attributes of God. The point is to study topics broadly and not create a simplistic idea that is incorrect in a broad application.

Where did these scriptures come from? I have 1,800 that I have saved from my personal scriptures in a spreadsheet over the years; there is another 1,000 that I have collected from various LDS and non-LDS books I have read; Alonzo Gaskill had a list of 900; and I have done several google searches for “favorite scriptures” to add even more.  These 2,500 are a result of combining all of these sources. I imagine I’ll add another 500 over the next while.

I have underlined a few words/phrases for personal interest/emphasis but none of the original texts have underlined words or phrases.

In order to find scriptures of the same topic, I have added a Key (Search: …)  to some scriptures so that one could put the item in search bar and find other scriptures related to that general topic.

System:

*xxx = to find a topic, i.e. *Repent, *Do, *Faith, etc., put the *xxx in the search bar to find some quotes related to that particular topic. This is not meant to be an exhaustive search of a specific topic, but more informational in usage. You could also search for a word without the * and find many more hits.

Key:

*xxx = to find a specific topic that I am interested in.

*Sem = LDS Seminary’s 100 scriptures (25 from each course, OT, NT, BM, D&C/Church History)

*DP = DP favorite 350 scriptures (DP1, DP2)

JST in front of a verse indicates it is from the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible which prophetically clarifies the original text.
