JST – how wonderous to have a living prophet to correct biblical misunderstandings

These are examples of the Joseph Smith Translation of the Bible compared to the original KJV Bible. This shows the tremendous differences that a living prophet makes over scholarly translators.

Paul ascended into the third heaven, and he could understand the three principal rounds of Jacob’s ladder- the telestial, the terrestrial, and the celestial glories or kingdoms, where Paul saw and heard things which were not lawful for him to utter.  I could explain a hundred fold more than I ever have of the glories of the kingdoms manifested to me in the vision, were I permitted, and were the people prepared to receive them.

Genesis 21:8-9 (JST 21:7) – Not only did Hagar mock Sarah, but her son mocked Sarah also. 8

Exodus 3:2 (JST 3:2) – The presence of the Lord (not an angel) appeared to Moses in the midst of a bush. 11

Exodus 4:21 (JST 4:21) – Pharoah hardened his own heart (it was not the Lord who hardened it) 11

Exodus 4:24-26 (JST 4:24-26) – Lord angry with Moses but spared him because of Zipporah. Moses ashamed. 11

Exodus 7:4 (JST 7:4) – Reason clarified using “therefore”. 12

Exodus 7:9 (JST 7:9) – Reason for Pharaoh’s request for a miracle given. 12

Exodus 10:1, 20, 27 (JST 10:1, 20, 27) – God doesn’t harden people’s hearts to show power, but shows power because they hardened their hearts. 12

Exodus 11:8-10 (JST 11:8-10) – Pharaoh’s servants to ask Moses to leave; God’s wonders are because of Pharaoh’s (not God’s) hardness. 12

Exodus 12:33 (JST 12:33) – Egyptians said their firstborn were all dead (not all the Egyptian people) 13

Exodus 12:37 – Israelite travelers were 600,000 men plus women and children (not just men and children) 13

Exodus 14:20 – clarification that the darkness was for the Egyptians and the light for Israel 13

Exodus 18:1 – Jethro was not only a priest, but he was a “high priest”. 13

Exodus 21:8 (JST 21:8) – clarifies that redeeming a daughter does not entitle her master to sell her 13

1 Samuel 15:10-11, 35 (JST 15:10-11, 35) – The Lord did not repent (nor could he), but it was Saul who repented “not”. 16

2 Samuel 12:13 (JST 12:13) The Lord did not forgive the sin of David (Bible says he did) 16

2 Samuel 24:16 (JST 24:16) The Lord cannot “repent” of evil; but the people can repent and the Lord can stay his hand. 17

Matthew 4:1, 5-6, 8-9 (JST 4:1, 5-9) – Holy Spirit leads Christ in wilderness, not Satan. 17

Matthew 4:11-12 (JST 4:11) – Angels didn’t comfort Jesus but were sent to John. 17

Genesis 9:4-6 (JST 9:10-13) Not eat flesh corrected; flesh ok, but not eat blood

Commanded to not eat blood, but flesh is ok

            Genesis – But flesh with the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.

            JST – But the blood of all flesh which I have given you for meat, shall be shed upon the ground which taketh life thereof, and the blood ye shall not eat.

Genesis 9:17 (JST 9:15) God spoke to Noah’s sons; covenant re-established

God spoke to not only Noah but to his sons; covenant that God made with Enoch was re-established

            Genesis – And God said unto Noah, This [the rainbow] is the token of the covenant, which I have established

            JST – And God spake unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying, And I, behold, I will establish my covenant with you, which I made unto your father [grand-father] Enoch, concerning your seed after you.

Nimrod was a mighty hunter, but not before the Lord

            Genesis – He [Nimrod] was a mighty hunter before the Lord: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the Lord.

            JST – He [Nimrod] was a mighty hunter in the land. Wherefore, it is said; Even as Nimrod, the mighty hunter in the land.

Genesis 13:14 (JST added 13:13) God’s covenant also given to Enoch, re-given to Abram

God’s covenant was given to Adam & Eve (Moses 6:51-2, 64-8), Noah, Enoch, and re-given to Abram

            JST – verse 14, (then a new verse) And remember the covenant which I make with thee; for it shall be an everlasting covenant; and thou shalt remember the days of Enoch thy father;

Genesis 14:18-24 (JST 14:17-40) new info about Melchizedek, God blessed Abram with covenant

17 verses added about Melchizedek and Abram

            Genesis – stops at verse 24 but Joseph Smith added 17 verses

            JST – Added 17 verses (17, 25-40) Melchizedek blessed Abram, was a man of righteousness, was a high priest, name of priesthood, preached repentance, his people became righteousness, sought to be like the City of Enoch, received tithes from Abram, God blessed Abram with riches and the Abrahamic Covenant.

Genesis 15:5-6 (JST 15:9-12) new info – Abram saw the coming of the Son of man

            Genesis – v5 and v6 have 4 new verses added between them

            JST – adds 4 verses between v5 and v6. How will thou give me this land? Even if Abram dies, he will possess it. Abram saw the coming of the Son of man (mortal ministry) and was glad and his soul rested.

Genesis 15:8 (JST 15:14) Abram wondered of God’s promise, (added) yet he believed

Abram wondered how he will inherit his land, yet he believed God

            Genesis – And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

            JST – And he said, Lord God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it? yet he believed God.

Genesis 16:10 (JST 16:11) The Lord (not an angel) promised Sarah that seed multiplies

The Lord, not an angel, promised Sarah that her seed would multiply

            Genesis – And the angel of the Lord said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly.

            JST – And the angel of the Lord said unto her, The Lord will multiply thy seed exceedingly.

Genesis 16:13 (JST 14-16) messenger is an angel (not the Lord)

The messenger to Sarah is not the Lord, but an angel. Sarah testifies that God sees her

            Genesis – And she called the name of the Lord that spake unto her, thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

            JST – And she called the name of the angel of the Lord. And he spake unto her, saying, Knowest thou that God seest thee? And she said, I know that God seest me, for I have also here looked after him.
